Women Build 2010

Women Build is a home-building mission which seeks to construct and build homes for families and communities. This build challenges women to devote at least one day in the effort to eliminate poverty housing.

From March to August 2010, Habitat for Humanity Zambia will be hosting a series of International Women's Builds with the aim of building a number of housing units for OVC households, serving an estimated 80 families. HFHI and HFH Zambia will be raising awareness on issues such as the plight of HIV/AIDS in Zambia with the aim of building 100 housing units in 2011 for Orphaned and Vulnerable Children in our areas of operation.

This project will be about building homes, with a focus on promoting women as leaders and more importantly, to provide an opportunity for women to learn new trades or skills, under the direction of both men and women who are skilled tradespersons. The Women’s Build will include all the benefits of a regular Habitat for Humanity build, but will add a twist by focusing on the encouragement of women to get involved in what is considered an otherwise male dominated profession. It is about women who build or who always wanted to build. It is about spirit, empowerment, solidarity, fun and learning. It is about working with a family to build a place they can call home. By participating in the Women’s Build, you can develop your building skills and gain a sense of pride with other women to build a home in partnership with a family who could not otherwise afford to own a home of their own.

Women Build is a great way to bring people together while providing a great service to the community. It encourages women to make a difference by building homes and communities. Women’s build celebrates compassion, dedication, talents and abilities of women from all walks of life. Its goal is to both showcase the accomplishments of Habitat’s women volunteers and to invite more women to join the effort to provide decent, safe affordable housing for local families.

Habitat for Humanity Zambia aims to bring corporate partners, partner organizations, Global Village teams and individuals to fundraise and build awareness on issues of Orphaned and Vulnerable Children (OVC) and the impact of HIV/AIDS. This will also be a platform for HFH Zambia to highlight the various issues that affect Zambian women and children such as abuse, property grabbing, succession rights and discrimination.
Together, we can change lives. With safe, decent and stable homes, children are likely to do better in school and in life. Wrecked housing is eliminated, improving the community for all. And as our dedicated volunteers will tell you, working with Habitat Zambia transforms their lives as well. The joys of making a real difference, learning new skills, and being part of a true community are priceless.
