Habitat for Humanity- Global Village
what is global village
Global Village (GV) is a two to three week “work camp”
experience. Volunteers come to build houses with Habitat for
Humanity Zambia. These volunteers come to enrich their knowledge
of cultures other than their own.
The Participants
Participants are mainly (but not exclusively) from the United
States and Europe. They normally span all ages and are mostly
unskilled in building. Both men and women participate in the
Global Village program.
Why do they come?
GV Participants come to learn other cultures, share their
culture, build friendships, laugh with different people they
meet and have fun.
How do they pay for the trip?
Individuals raise money from friends and family to cover costs
of their expenses. They also raise an additional donation that
is put into the Revolving Fund of Habitat for Humanity (in the
country they are visiting) to help build more houses. Hosting a
work camp is not a financial burden on the affiliate, but will
take time, energy, and commitment.
How is an Affiliate selected to host a work camp?
The National Office will select an affiliate based on the
following criteria:
-Good repayment rate
- Amount of construction
- Local community involvement
- Affiliate good standing i.e. not suspended
- Level of local committee activities
- Local fundraising efforts
-Safety / Security of environment
