Women Build Ambassador leads by example!

In August, Mrs. Chilufya Mwaba-Phiri, Director of Zambia Health Education and Communications Trust showed leadership in bringing together women from the Catholic Women’s League to volunteer their time and ‘sweat equity’ to build a home for Elebesi Tembo, an 80 year old widow of Chazanga compound has not been spared from this HIV/AIDS and orphan pandemic that has hit Zambia. She has lost nine of her eleven children to HIV related diseases.

Habitat for Humanity Zambia in partnership with Bwafwano and the Catholic Women’s League recently built a house for Elebesi’s family.

They moved in a month ago and are happy to be back together. The new house provides both physical and emotional security for the family among other benefits that come with decent shelter.

I give thanks to the heavens for this house because even on days when we have not had a meal, we know that we have a home. It makes such a big difference. I feel whole” Elebesi.

Squatting with our neighbour was not a very pleasant experience. She was very kind but we were used to having our own place. I’m happy to be in our own house”, Maria.
