The Irish Aid Programme in Zambia began in 1980 and is administered by the Embassy of Ireland in Lusaka. Irish Aid works closely with Government and Civil Society partners to pursue the goals Zambia have set for the country’s development, as outlined in the Zambian Government’s Fifth National Development Plan and Zambia’s Aid Policy. Towards the end of 2007, Irish Aid finalised a new Country Strategy Paper (CSP) for Zambia with a budget allocation of €27 million for the 2008 programme.
In recent years, Ireland’s engagement has evolved towards greater support for the education sector to plan and implement sustainable education systems and programmes which meet the needs of the country, HIV and AIDS, gender inequality and good governance programmes. In its approach, it recognises and reaches the poorest.
Habitat for Humanity Zambia in partnership with Habitat for Humanity Ireland are currently implementing a Vulnerable Group Housing project with Irish Aid funding amounting to €508,085 for an agreed period of 3 years starting 1 October 2007 and ending on 30th September, 2010. A total of 280 housing units are expected to be completed benefiting 280 OVC families. These are families that have been affected by poverty and whose situation has been worsened by loss of a breadwinner due mainly to HIV/AIDS and property grabbing.
